It was first developed in pre-Inca Peru, and throughout the Incan Dynasty, its popularity soared. It is easily recognized by its hairless body; however, it may have a few scattered hairs on top of its head.

You can find depictions of these dogs as lovable companions on Andean ceramic and Moche vessels. The dogs were rumored to be able to heal arthritis. The New York Times reports that Peruvian hairless dogs live eleven to twelve years, weigh a maximum of 26 pounds, grow 16 to 20 inches at the shoulder, and have lively, affectionate, and alert personalities. These dogs are still considered to be "as important as Machu Picchu" in their native Peru.
