There are eighteen kinds of hamsters, but the Syrian golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) is the most popular type kept as a pet. The more than 120 different types of golden hamsters reflect a broad spectrum of fur tones and textures.
Since hamsters are not regarded as domesticated animals like guinea pigs, rabbits, cats, or dogs are, your pet hamster will resemble the untamed golden hamsters that saunter across the arid plains of northwest Syria. It's acceptable to have just one golden hamster as a pet because they like to live alone in their natural habitat.
A hamster makes a low-maintenance pet as long as you can provide them with food, water, enrichment activities, and a well-ventilated cage.
