Although they were first domesticated thousands of years ago as a source of food, rabbits make wonderful pets today. Domestic rabbits come in 50 strains, all descended from the European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus).
Pet rabbits housed indoors can live twice as long as those kept outside in a cage, according to the House Rabbit Society. Due to their sociable nature, rabbits should be treated as members of the family, according to the House Rabbit Society. After all, they are sentient animals that can be trained to use a litter box.
Although pet rabbits are known to meet their owners and love sitting near them, most of them don't appreciate snuggling; thus, the hardest aspect of owning a soft, fluffy bunny may be restraining yourself from wanting to pick them up.
