Rats are a really contentious choice for a pet. Rats are not usually brought home as pets; instead, most people are more concerned with keeping them out of their homes. But for anyone who appreciates training but doesn't want the commitment of a larger animal like a dog, rats can make terrific pets. They are little geniuses.
Out of all the rat species, only the domesticated brown rat (Rattus norvegicus), commonly referred to as the fancy rat, is kept as a pet. Compared to wild brown rats, fancy rats are more subdued, smaller, and have a wider range of colors and textures.
Pet rats have brief lives—two years on average—but they can form strong bonds with both their human caregivers and one another. It is recommended to keep these gregarious creatures in pairs. A pet rat's bright, curious attitude will wow you if you bring one home. However, keep in mind that they are nocturnal, so you might hear their antics at night.
